LAHORE (PR) – The Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Government College University (GCU), has awarded a prize of Rs500,000 to Syed Waqar Ali Shah of Pak-Turk International School, Karachi, for winning silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in July.
World renowned mathematical scientists from Bulgaria, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Georgia, Russia and Romania attended the Olympiad.
ASSMS Director General Dr AD Raza Chaudhry, while awarding the prize, said that the winning of silver medal by a Pakistani student at an international contest was Pakistan’s highest achievement in the field of mathematics. “This was a matter of national pride for Pakistan and its scientific community,” he added.
The coach of Pakistan’s Olympiad team, Prof Berceanu, who is also a member of the ASSMS faculty, was also present on the occasion.
