Gull vows to contest election from NA-104

LAHORE – MUBASHIR HASSAN - Senior PPP leader from Gujrat Nawabzada Ghazanfar Gull is determined to contest the upcoming general elections from NA-104 even if he was expelled from the party for violation of discipline.
The PPP and the PML-Q are in agreement not to field candidates against each other in constituencies won by either party in the 2008 elections. NA-104 (Gujrat) is one of the constituencies won by the PML-Q in the last elections, thus the PPP is bound under the agreement to leave this seat for its coalition partner.
“I have a commitment with the Bhuttos to keep on opposing the scions of Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi in Gujrat in all the elections to follow,” the senior politician from Gujrat said while talking to TheNation.
When reminded of the PPP’s seats adjustment with the PML-Q, according to which he could not be a party candidate from NA-104, Gull replied that he would contest the election as an independent candidate.
Ghazanfar, who is also a member of the PPP’s central executive committee, told this scribe that he felt bound to honour his commitment with the PPP Founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to oppose the Chaudhrys as long as he was alive.  Asked if he was not committed to the PPP headed by Asif Ali Zardari, the politicians from Gujrat said: “Nothing is more important than one’s honour and ego.”
Answering a question about the possibility of leaving the PPP ahead of the upcoming elections, Gull said he would not leave the party in any case. “I am a Jiyala to the core and no one can detach the PPP from my body and soul.” “I am the PPP myself,” Gull said while expressing his strong affiliation with the party. “It is another matter if I am expelled from the party by force,” he added.
It may be recalled here that Nawabzada Ghazanfar Gull and Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar have openly opposed seats adjustment with the PML-Q, apparently because of their traditional rivalry with the Chaudhrys of Gujrat.
There is only one constituency in Gujrat, NA-104, from where the PPP is bound not to field its candidate in the upcoming elections under the agreement.
In the last elections, PML-Q’s Ch Wajahat Hussain had defeated Ghazanfar Gull by a wide margin of 32,955 votes. It is from this constituency that some disgruntled elements from Nawabzada family have joined the PML-N, apparently against the will of the elder Gull.
