LAHORE - Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) called former hockey Olympian Tahir Zaman, who is likely to be national hockey team coach, and sought his help in lifting the sagging fortune of Pakistan hockey. Talking to the reporters here at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday, Tahir said: “PHF secretary M Asif Bajwa especially invited me for the meeting in which we have discussed the present hockey scenario.” Tahir had earlier parted ways with the present regime of the national hockey federation four years ago and time and again criticised the working of the PHF over poor showing of the PHF and national hockey team as well. The meeting comes as a surprise as both, the PHF and Tahir had fallen apart and now it seems both the parties have reached an agreement to sink their differences. “My services are available for the cause of betterment of hockey and if the PHF offers me any responsibility, I will consider it in the larger interest of country,” he said. To a query, he replied: “Nothing has finalised yet to become a national team coach as it is up to the PHF whatever they think best to assign me. I am here just to serve my country and hockey and will do my best to bring it to better position.” To another query, he said: “The meeting purely focussed on revival of hockey and it does not mean that everything is okay as far as my differences are concerned with the present hockey federation.”“It was a step forward to look into the prevailing hockey situation and nothing else and if some one says that I came here with an agenda with some conditions then it is completely wrong. I have my own group and think tanks and cannot leave them in one go. I will consider everything before making a final decision,” he added. He said he was a high performance certified coach of International Hockey Federation (FIH) and had coached many teams of the world successfully. “I have a lot of coaching offers with me but now my main aim is to serve Pakistan hockey because whatever I have achieved in my life is just because of this game,” he added. He said he did not know that if he would be handing over the senior or junior team. “Whatever PHF will offer me I will look into it before making up my mind,” he said. It is reliably learnt that International Hockey Federation (FIH) has sent Tahir Zaman here to strengthen Pakistan hockey team and bring it to top-five outfits of the world which it really deserves. The FIH wants high performance federations i.e. Indian and Pakistan hockey federations to strengthen their team and to improve themselves technical and physically. The Pakistan-India bilateral hockey series is a part of this plan which will surely help in boosting both the team’s morale as well as performances. The arrival of Tahir Zaman, who is internationally recognized hockey coach, in Pakistan and likely to have a good slot in the PHF is also a part of the FIH plan and it is hoped that he will do his best to improve Pakistan team performance at international level but also help in strengthening the relations of both the neighbouring countries.
