M.A Zuberi passes away

KARACHI - The Editor-in-Chief and founder editor of the daily Business Recorder and Patron-in-Chief of Aaj News, M.A. Zuberi, passed away here on Sunday. M.A. Zuberi was born in Merehra, Uttar Pradesh, India, on July 2, 1920. He left behind three sons, two daughters, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be buried in the compound of Abdullah Shah Ghazi Shrine, Clifton, Karachi. His Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered today (Monday) at Masjid Noor-ul-Islam, Zamzama Park, Clifton, after Zohr prayers. A pioneer of economic and financial journalism in Pakistan, M.A. Zuberi was former president and one of the founding members of Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE). Zuberi represented Pakistan at various international forums including Commonwealth Press Union, United Nations and World Bank/IMF annual meetings. Sitara-i-Imtiaz and many other awards were conferred on him. He joined the profession of journalism under the commands of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in December 1945. As senior assistant editor Dawn, he also launched the Evening Star. He took retirement from Dawn after 20 years. A year later, he launched Business Recorder, the first business daily of the Muslim World. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani have expressed deep sorrow and grief over the sad demise of M.A. Zuberi. In his message, the President paid tributes to the services of the deceased and prayed to Allah for the eternal rest of the departed soul. The Prime Minister telephoned Editor Business Recorder Wamiq Zuberi, the son of the deceased, and condoled with him on the death of his father. He lauded the invaluable contribution of late M.A. Zuberi for the promotion of healthy journalism as well as the social services for the people, which would be long remembered. Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira also condoled the death. Staff Reporter from Lahore adds: Condoling the demise of MA Zuberi, Editor-in-Chief The Nation Majid Nizami said that he was a renowned journalist who had always worked for developing media with strong commitment to the ethics. He said the country had lost a man who would always remain part of the countrys cherished history of journalism. In a message to Wamiq Zuberi, Nizami said the demise of MA Zuberi was not a loss for his family but to the entire journalistic community as well as the newspaper industry.
