Punjab PPP endorses Seraiki province

LAHORE - The Parliamentary Party of PPP in the Punjab Assembly Monday adopted a resolution for creating another province in the southern Punjab. The Opposition parties, PPP and PML-Q, have moved the resolutions in the Punjab Assembly for making the southern Punjab a separate province. The MMA and the PML-Z, supporting the treasury in the Punjab Assembly, have already filed resolutions for the establishment of Thal province as well as the restoration of Bahawalpurs previous status. In the previous session, the issue was hotly debated and the same situation is expected during the ongoing session. Briefing the media on the meeting and decisions of the Parliamentary Party of the PPP held before the session, Opposition Leader Raja Riaz said the meeting prayed for early recovery of President Asif Ali Zardari and hoped he would soon resume his constitutional duties on return to the country. He went on: MPA Makhdoom Irtaza presented the resolution for the creation of a province in the southern Punjab, which was passed with one voice. He said it was the National Assembly that passed resolution for another province in the first instance and now they wanted the Punjab Assembly to show its will for another province by carrying the resolution so that the NA could act respecting sentiments of the Punjab members. Raja Riaz said the Opposition members were not being given their development funds and that the business advisory committee did not take up the matter about their resolution for another province in Punjab. PML-Qs Ch Zaheeruddin urged the federal government to pass the resolution on the creation of a new province in the southern Punjab so that the Opposition could also play its role in the Punjab Assembly. He said the resolution presented by PML-Q for another province in Punjab had been referred by the Chair for legal opinion, which showed the Treasury did not enjoy the majority to defeat the same and now the government was being run with the support of minority. He said the resolution did not need any legal opinion as the House was a higher forum where yes or no determines the fate of a resolution. Zaheer said that his parliamentary party expressed serious concerns over the delay in local bodies elections in the province which was a third tier of the democratic system. He said billions of rupees, which otherwise have to be allocated for the local governments, were being spent by the government without any audit. He said under the Constitution no alternative existed for the LG system and the present setup in its place is without the support of any legislation or amendment to the LG law. The party also discussed the law and order in the province that, according to him, was not satisfactory. The party has a deep concern over the situation and wants the government to give top most priority to this area. He said the party also adopted a resolution to pay homage to the soldiers who embraced martyrdom in the Salala post attack.
