Naek and Jan Jamali elected unopposed

ISLAMABAD - Farooq H Naek and Jan Muhammad Jamali, after being elected respectively as Chairman and Deputy Chairman, Senate, unopposed, took oath of their offices on Thursday. Acting Chairman Senate, Senator Tahir Mashhadi, administered the oath to the newly elected Chairman Farooq H Naek, who later administered the oath to Deputy Chairman Jan Muhammad Jamali. Farooq H Naek was the Law Minister before being elected as the Chairman of the Upper House. Prior to that he had served in different capacities as Assistant Director, Civil Judge and First Class Magistrate and Deputy Attorney General of Pakistan. Farooq H Naek, a graduate from Karachi University in law and economics, was enrolled as a lawyer in 1970, as a high court lawyer in 1976 and as a supreme court lawyer in 1990. He was elected as a Senator in 2003 for six years' term. Now again he has been elected for another six years term in the recently held Senate polls. Naek was jailed for six months during eighties for leading demonstrations against General Ziaul Haq. The Amnesty International declared him as prisoner of conscience. Senator Jan Jamali has been elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Upper House consecutively for the second time. Earlier, 49 newly elected Senators out of 50 took oath as members of the Upper House. They would replace the 50 Senators who had retired on March 11 after completing their term. Tahir Mashhadi, Acting Chairman administered the oath to the newly elected members of the Upper House. Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani of JUI-F is the only one who has not taken oath so far. The Senators who took oath were Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Prof Sajid Mir, Pervaiz Rashid, Raja Muhammad Zafarul Haq, Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Mushahid Ullah Khan, Begum Najma Hameed, Muhammad Jehangir Badar, Salahuddin Dogar, Syeda Sughra Imam, Muhammad Kazim Khan, Moula Baksh Chandio, Islamuddin Sheikh, Gul Muhammad Lot, Syed Faisal Raza Abidi, Dr Khatu Mal, Farooq H Naek, Abdul Rehman Malik, Almas Perveen, Shirala Malik, Babar Khan Ghauri, Abdul Haseeb Khan, Muhammad Zahid Khan, Haji Muhammad Adeel, Abdul Nabi Bangash, Farah Aqil, Afrasiab Khattak, Gulzar Ahmed Khan, Waqar Ahmed Khan, Sardar Ali Khan, Farhat Abbas, Adnan Khan, Haji Ghulam, Nawabzada Haji Muhammad Lashkari Raisani, Surriya Amiruddin, Sabir Ali Baloch, Nawab Muhammad Akbar Magsi, Mir Wali Muhammad Badini, Muhammad Hamayun Khan, Mir Muhammad Ali Baloch, Mir Hasil Khan Bazinjo, Kulsoom Parveen, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Malik Rasheed Ahmed Khan, Abbas Khan, Haji Khan, Muhammad Idrees Khan Safi, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari and Saeeda Iqbal. The Senators signed the roll register after taking oath.
