wah cantt - The University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila on Thursday became only varsity in Punjab and second in the country offering bachelor in automotive engineering technology.
While addressing launching ceremony of BSc Automotive Engineering Technology, Vice Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar said that after the NED University Karachi, the UET Taxila was the only varsity to have launched the programme keeping in view emerging automobiles’ sector in the country.
He said that the sector contributed up to four per cent to the country’s gross domestic product annually. He said that the sector attracted a huge sum of Rs92 billion in investments, providing an opportunity to engineers and other workers.
He said that the UET Taxila had transformed itself from conventional engineering university into an outcome- and need-based educational research centre.
He said that with the academia and industry linkages, many new non-conventional programmes at under-graduate, graduate and post-graduate level would be lunched to meet the specific need of engineers in different fields.
He said that the UET Taxila also introduced three different programmes including BSc Engineering in Cyber Security Technology, Automotive Technology and PhD in Structure Engineering.
Dr Akhter informed the audience that a sum of Rs2 billion had been allocated for provision of different facilities at the university and a sum of Rs1 billion for human development. The VC added that a sum of Rs110 million had been spent for up-gradation of laboratories as well as equipping the same with the latest and state of the art testing equipment to make the UET Taxila a centre of excellence in research.
He said that for the first time in history of the university, students of various departments were sent to various affiliated industrial units, who examined problems and technical obstacles in design, commission, operation and production of these units and now these problems and obstacles were being studied at the campus by the concerned students with proper guidance of the faculty.
He said that with this exercise, the students would not only be practically involved with the industry but also would learn about environment and working in industry much before joining the practical life.
