LAHORE - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved district status for Murree to make it more attractive for the tourists by initiating various development schemes there.
A high level meeting chaired by the prime minister just before his departure for Saudi Arabia, also approved establishment of Murree Heritage Authority which would be an autonomous body to preserve the beauty of the hill station which attracts millions of local and foreign tourists every year. The federal and Punjab governments would equally contribute in the development funds to be utilized by the authority for various projects. The prime minister directed to enhance supply of water to Murree from existing 1.3 million gallons per day to 1.95 million gallons to meet its growing demand for water. He also ordered installation of water treatment plants at the hill station. The prime minister ordered the authorities concerned to make provision for establishment of a Railway Station close to Murree in the Rawalpindi-Muzaffarabad Rail project. The prime minister rejected the feasibility study for cable car project in Murree raising various objections.
