The campaign for local bodies elections entered the final stage in Khanewal that is divided into 135 union councils where 1,960 candidates are in the race for chairman/vice chairman and general councillor slots.
A total of 2,579 candidates from rural areas in 135 union councils filed nomination papers for 718 seats of general councilors of which 218 candidates withdrew their nominations while 101 councillors have been elected unopposed.
However, four candidates of chairman/vice chairman from Kabirwala tehsil and 1 from Jahanian tehsil have been elected unopposed.
The unopposed winners from Kabirwala are Syed Abid Imam; Syed Raza Abbas; Syed Abid Imam, son of former speaker of National Assembly Syed Fakhar Imam; Raza Sargana, Irfan Faqir Sial, Khalid Thaheem and Ghulam Farid, Haider Rana, Muhammad Aftab, Ziaur Rehman and Hayat Awan.
From urban areas of Khanewal district, there are 6 municipal committees and for 114 seats of general councillor (urban), 752 candidates are competing. However, two general councillors have been elected unopposed one from Ward 4 of Municipal Committee Jahanian namelyHahi Attaur Rehman, brother of MNA Ch Iftikhar Nazir.
From Municipal Committee Kabirwala, Ward 3, Athar Yousaf Khan has been elected as general councillor. Most of the unopposed winners are from the PML-N or independents.
About 1.434 million voters will cast their votes. From UC 126 Chak 113/10R, candidate of chairman Akram Dhariwal has died thus the election for the seat has been postponed.
Meanwhile, Daha Group led by Haji Irfan Daha former Punjab minister and MPA Nishat Ahmad Khan; Syed Group led by Syed Fakhar Imam; Hiraj Group of Ahmadyar Hiraj and Barrister Raza Hayat Hiraj; Bodla Group of MNA Pir Muhammad and Iftikhar Group of MNA Iftikhar Nazir are grouping for the seat of district nazim and city nazims of the six municipal committees.
Dacoits sweep three houses: Seven dacoits looted three houses in village 16/V Makhdoompur in the limits of Kohna Police here the other night.
The dacoits forced their entry into the three different houses of Muhammad Ali, Gulzar Ahmad and Muhammad Jamil.
Bandits tortured the family members including 70-year-old Ahmad Raza Khan, mother of Gulzar Ahmad, and daughter of Jamil. They also snatched earrings from Marrium.
The dacoits tied residents with ropes in their houses and looted Rs100,000, gold ornaments worth more then Rs0.6 million, cellphones, two licensed 12 bore rifles and other valuables.
The local politician including Aamir Gulzar, Rana Muhammad Abbas and candidate for the slot of chairman UC-83, Rana Hazeez, Rana Mukhtar and other protested against the iccident. They demanded the district police to arrest the culprits involved in the dacoity.
DCO inspects anti-TB clinic: More than 150 TB patients are being treated in district anti-TB Clinic on daily basis who are not only provided with medicines but x-rays and other tests facility free of cost. The clinic is being run with the cooperation of Anti-TB Association.
In-charge of the clinic Medical Officer Dr Javed Akhtar briefed DCO Amer Ijaz Akbar during his visit to the clinic.
The DCO inspected microscopic laboratory, x-ray plant room, medicines store and anti-TB association office. President Anti-TB Association Dr Nasir Ahmad was also present.
