Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has been elected as the Punjab Assembly Speaker. The PML leader secured 201 votes out of total 349 votes, against PML-N's Iqbal Gujar, who received 147 votes.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was born in Gujrat, Punjab (1 November 1945) is a Pakistani politician who was the first and only Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2013. After a successful campaign in 2002 general elections, he became the chief minister of Punjab and tenured until 2007. In 2008, he served as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan.
Elahi received his early education from Forman Christian College, Lahore in 1967 and later attended Watford College of Technology, London. He began his political career after being elected as the Gujrat district council chairman for four years in 1983. He served as Provincial Minister for Local Government and Rural Development for a period of eight years from 1985 to 1993.
He was elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab four times in general elections of 1985, 1988, 1990 & 1993 as well. He served as acting leader of the opposition in Punjab Assembly from 1993 to 1996 in the absence of Shehbaz Sharif. He was re-elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly for the fifth time in 1997 general election and was elected as the speaker of Punjab Assembly in 1997. He was re-elected as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab for the sixth time in Pakistani general election, 2002.
Following the elections, Elahi was appointed as the chief minister of Punjab for the first time from October 2002 to October 2007. In general election, 2008, Elahi was elected as the member of the National Assembly for the first time and also elected as the member of the Punjab Assembly for the seventh time.
