GILGIT - Gilgit-Baltistan government on Friday has launched a campaign to plant three million olive trees in the province to save the environment and ecosystem. The project will be completed in three months, said Asifullah, Secretary Forest, and Wildlife GB.
The campaign has been launched by the forest department to give the gift of trees to all notables in the region.
Ferman Ali Minister forest & wildlife, Asifullah Secretary, Walayat Noor Chief Conservator visited different areas where they inaugurated and supervised the plantation of olive trees in these areas.
While addressing journalists on the occasion, Asif Ullah, Secretary Forest, and wildlife said that the forest and wildlife department engages the community and the students of schools and colleges to plant olive trees.
He underlined the importance to create awareness among masses about plantation so that collective efforts could be made to protect the nature.
He said that Aga Khan Rural Support Program and WWF agreed to support the plantation of olive trees campaign.
Air Force will start plantation of 30,000 trees in Nalter valley, WWF will plant 70,000 plants in different parts of GB, around 20,000 trees will be planted by the GB Rural Support Program, 200,000 trees will be planted by the Wildlife Conservation Committees in their respective areas, 20,000 trees will be distributed as gift trees among people and 190,000 trees will be planted by the GB Forest Department.
Meanwhile, the region is suffering from various climate change implications in the form of flash floods, glacier lake outbursts, landslides and erosion due to deforestation in the region.
