Lawmakers brawl over alleged judicial interference by ex-CJP

| Government says Opposition trying to gain political mileage

Three-time PM is unable to return to country and busy in hatching conspiracies against institutions: Murad Saeed

ISLAMABAD  -  The National Assembly for the second day on Tuesday witnessed an exchange of harsh words between treasury and the opposition benches on an issue relating to judiciary.

The lawmakers, ignoring the agenda, consumed all proceedings time on point of order about alleged judicial interference by ex-CJP. Minister for Communication Murad Saeed, responding to concerns raised by opposition, commented that opposition was building a narrative to take some political mileage.

About the timing of this controversy, the minister said that time of the affidavit given by an ex-Chief Judge should be noted when the court is set to hear an important case on November 17. He said that former prime minister had no positive history to become prime minister. “He is product of General Ziaul Haq and Lt General Jilani,” he commented.

“The three-time prime minister is unable to return to the country and busy in hatching conspiracies against institutions while sitting abroad. “If you are innocent, come and face the court,” said the minister.

PML-N’s MNA Mian Javed Latif of PML-N demanded of the chair to constitute a parliamentary committee of the House which should investigate as to who was speaking the truth. “We will have to decide whether to become Justice Saqib Nisar or act as Justice Faiz Isa and Shuakat Aziz Siddiqui,” he remarked. He cited an example of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto case that after 20 years, a judge admitted that Bhutto was wrongly awarded death sentence. He said, “Now a former chief judge is saying that then chief justice asked judge of Islamabad High Court not to grant bail to Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz prior to 2018 General Elections.

Responding to concerns raised by opposition member, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on CDA Affairs, Ali Nawaz Awan and PTI parliamentarian Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi said that PML-N was trying to build a narrative at this political juncture.

Earlier, the lawmakers from PPP and MQM-P Pakistan accused each other for not taking care of a serious matter related to fire eruption at Cooperative Market in Karachi.

Speaking on a point of order, PPP MNA Shazia Marri asked the MQM parliamentarians to avoid making point scoring on issues of Karachi. “They (MQM-P) did not visit the area when this incident happened,” she said

Whereas, MQM MNA Osama Qadri said he raised issue of Cooperative Market tragedy in the House on Monday because he wanted the provincial government to come into action.
