Cheques distribution among camel jockeys' families be ensured: SC

ISLAMABAD A three-member Supreme Court bench on Thursday directed the Interior Ministry to ensure completion of disbursement of compensation cheques among the families of the children who were used as camel jockeys in Middle East. The bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Ghulam Rabbani ordered the Interior Secretary to submit compliance report before the court on October 8, the date fixed for next hearing. On last hearing, the court had directed the federal and provincial governments to evolve a mechanism to deliver cheques to the families of the children who were trafficked to the Gulf for working as camel jockeys. Additional Advocate General Punjab Khadim Hussain Qaiser, Director General Child Protection and Welfare Board, Lahore Iram Bukhari and officials of the Interior Ministry appeared before the court on notice. Khadim Hussain Qaiser submitted a report on behalf of Joint Secretary Interior stating that in compliance with the court orders, the Interior Ministry held a meeting, chaired by Interior Secretary to resolve the issues relating to disbursement of cheques among the families of the repatriated children camel jockeys. The court was also informed that out of 810 cheques, each worth $1,000, 768 cheques were given for 16 districts of Punjab, 41 in five districts of Sindh and one in one district of Balochistan. Director General Child Protection and Welfare Board, Punjab, Iram Bukhari informed the court that cheques to the extent of Punjab had been delivered to Registrar of Lahore High Court for onward disbursement in 16 districts for which judicial officers have been appointed by the LHC Registrar. The court was told that 41 cheques relating to five districts of Sindh would be returned to the Interior Ministry and would be sent to Home Secretary Sindh. Likewise, she said one cheque relating to Balochistan would be sent to Home Secretary, Balochistan. The court was informed that all steps would be taken for prompt disbursement of cheques to the repatriated child camel jockeys in compliance of the court orders. When chief justice asked how the process of disbursement of cheques among the families of child camel jockeys would be completed, Shahbir Ahmed Joint Secretary Ministry of Interior sought two months time for completing the process of cheques disbursement. The court then directed the official to complete the process within 15 days and submit report before the court on October 8.
