Save Karachi

Unfortunately, certain political parties have divided Karachi on ethnic basis for their vested interests. The ethnic divide by the political parties in the metropolis often creates disturbance in the city in which scores of innocent people are killed. There are certain political parties in Karachi who want to create its hegemony by hook or by crook. Their representatives have spread their anti-Pakhtun, anti-Punjabi, anti-Sindhi anti-Baloch and anti-Urdu speaking biases and prejudices in the city, so much so that even a small incident triggers massive violence in Karachi. I just want to be logical here. Karachi is the economic hub and the international port city of the country. People coming from different parts of the subcontinent constitute its population. All of us belonging to different ethnicities, speaking different languages and adhering to different cultures have equal stakes in the city. There are Karachi-like metropolises across the world where people live in great harmony and peace and we do not hear about ethnic and sectarian violence there. Karachi alone offers employment and business opportunities, which no other city of the country replicates. Karachi is a part of this country and being Pakistanis everyone reserve the right to settle in this city to earn their livelihood. But certain politicians want to make Karachi as 'jagirdari of their political parties which is wrong. It may be remembered that Karachi has been developed after Pakistan came into being on 14th August 1947 jointly by all including pre-partitioned Karachittes, Muhajirs who migrated from India and all those who came to Karachi from different parts of the country with the passage of time either to earn their livelihood as labourers, small business entrepreneurs, businessmen, industrialists, doctors, engineers or to work on different jobs. So its not only pre-partitioned Karachittes and Muhajirs alone for making Karachi a giant industrial hub and the 'City of lights but it a joint efforts by all Karachittes which now include Punjabis, Pukhtuns, Sindhis, Baloch and other migrants. All of them want to live in Karachi in harmony for a better future for their families. If anyone of the above community is made to leave Karachi by force of circumstances then it will be a great setback and this gap will not be filled by any other community which will be an irreparable damage to Karachi. For this very purpose people from Pakistan also go abroad and settle their business there and some people also seek nationality of that country and they are welcome by the people those countries including politicians who never object to it and never develop any hatred against them. I therefore, appeal to all politicians of our country to stop fighting political turf war over Karachi if they love Pakistan and have some fear of God Almighty. The present ruling political party can play a very important role in controlling the scene created by the political parties in Karachi if it really wants to. SQN LDR (RETD) S.
