KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Sirajul Haq and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khurshid Shah discussed the possible suggestions to resolve the ongoing political crisis emerged from the sit-ins staged by the PTI and PAT in Islamabad.
According to sources, both the leaders during a meeting here agreed to put forward proposals to the PML-N government for accelerating the electoral reforms and reducing the ruling tenure to four years through constitutional amendments. They differed with the demands of the protesting parties, suggesting Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri to show flexibility.
Both the opposition leaders reaffirmed their commitment to safeguard democracy by showing unanimity among the political forces, and reject the illegal demands of national government or any other unconstitutional step. They also emphasised on PM Nawaz Sharif to take initiative for dialogue process with the protesting leaders. It was decided that both the leaders would contact with the protesting parties and other political leaders.
Talking to media, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khurshid Shah said that they would not accept any unconstitutional demand of toppling the elected governments and resignation of PM Nawaz Sharif. He further said that Imran Khan had assured him of not taking any step that might harm the democracy and Constitution. He said the ongoing political crisis could be resolved in the Parliament.
JI Chief Sirajul Haq said that politicians themselves would resolve the current issues. He said he was in contact with all parties and met with Syed Khurshid Shah to discuss the current situation, adding that the government should also take first step to resolve the issue. He said that it would become difficult to unite different ethnicity and sects if the Constitution was abrogated. He said the army had been neutral so far.
The JI head said that he and Khurshid Shah would be in Islamabad to contact with the protesting leaders, hoping that the existing political crisis would be resolved through dialogue.
