MULTAN - Democracy is in our blood which is why every year we remember and pay homage to all those who gave sacrifices for democracy.
Former prime minister of Pakistan and opposition leader in Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani expressed these views on the occasion of 14th anniversary of Karsaz tragedy. He said in 2007 when General Pervez Musharraf announced imposition of emergency in the country, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto said she will be returning to Pakistan on October 18, 2007. Her announcement was hailed by all democratic circles of the country. She returned to Pakistan ignoring all threats to her life and made history. Tens of thousands of people welcomed her. Gilani said it was a bright and memorable day in the history of Pakistan when Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto promised with people of Karachi that she will not hesitate to sacrifice anything for her dear homeland.
When this caravan of democracy reached Karsaz, enemy of the state unleashed a suicide attack on the public gathering as a result of which 177 people embraced martyrdom. These were the 177 martyrs due to whom democracy was restored in Pakistan. Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto-led team presented an image of Pakistan before the world where women were enjoying their rights, writ of the state was established and Parliament played its role to protect the Constitution.
