KHANEWAL
Under the alleged patronage of traffic police, illegal stands of rickshaws and goods transports have been causing frequent traffic jams in the city as the owners “grease the policemen’s palm” for not taking action against the stands.
The local residents alleged that bribe was the main source of income of the traffic police led by Inspector Amjad Kamboh. They demanded that RPO Amjad Javid and DPO Jahanzaib Nazir should take stern action against the “corrupt” traffic policemen.
They said that the policemen did not follow the rules and regulations during their duty hours, adding that most of the cops had been working for five to 10 years in the same areas.
Illegal stands of rickshaws, mini goods’ transports and vans are situated in the middle of the city in front of Government Girls Model High School, Ayub Road Chowk, Midowwala Chowk, Sabzi Mandi Road, RCA Chowk, Government Girls College, Shahana Road, Awan Chowk, Lakkar Mandi, Lahore Mor and Niazi Chowk.
The people alleged that the practice was due to the support of the traffic police inspector and other cops due to which the traffic on main roads remains choked thereby causing accidents on daily basis.
In addition, vagabonds sitting on these stands harass the girl students, and females passing by the roads. The people demanded that the chief minister of Punjab should action against policemen.
When contacted, Traffic Police DSP Sajjad Gujjar said that he would take action against the illegal stands and the policemen if found guilty. However, the inspector denied the allegations but refused to comment on the issue.
