Boxer in Pakistan, court told

LAHORE - The federal government Wednesday told the Lahore High Court that former police inspector Abid Boxer who was earlier taken into custody by the UAE police is now in Pakistan.  Acting Chief Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq was hearing the petition moved by Jaffar Rafi, the father-in-law of Abid Boxer seeking protection of his son-in-law.

A federal law officer appeared in the court and said that Abid Boxer now was in Pakistan. He said he was taken to Pakistan from UAE in February. At this, Justice Haq directed the law officer to produce the accused him (Abid Boxer) in the court on the next date of hearing.

It is first that the federal government said that Abid Boxer was in Pakistan as previously the government authorities were reluctant to share the whereabouts of the accused.

Petitioner Rafi said there was a strong apprehension that Pakistani police would kill Boxer in fake encounter after bringing him back to the country with the help of Interpol. He said a number of fabricated cases had been registered against his son in-law only on the basis of political victimization.

He asked the court to summon record of all the cases and order the FIA and the police to ensure protection of Boxer.

He pleaded that right of fair trial of Boxer should be protected as guaranteed under Article 10-A of the Constitution. The court would resume hearing on July 27.
