Durable peace in region hinges on Kashmir: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD   -  Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Thursday said that durable peace, security and development in the region hinged on peaceful resolution of the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

Addressing the ‘Islamabad Security Dialogue’ in the federal capital, he said India must stop violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms in IIOJK, halt its illegal attempts to change the demographic structure in the occupied territory and implement the UN Security Council resolutions. 

The Foreign Minister said India must also rethink its policy of fomenting destabilisation in Pakistan and embrace a progressive agenda that could benefit the entire region.

Talking about peace in Afghanistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan had steadfastly supported an Afghan-led an Afghan-owned peace process as there was no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Qureshi said Pakistani leadership’s vision of Naya Pakistan was focused around economic security for the well-being and welfare of the people. The Minister said Pakistan was advocating co-existence and win-win cooperation instead of partake in geo-political competition and rivalries. He said Pakistan had decided not to be a part of any regional conflict and had consciously chosen to be only a partner for peace and development. He said Pakistan was calling for inclusive and cooperative approaches based on enhanced economic partnerships. He said Pakistan was emerging as the gateway to landlocked Central Asia and Afghanistan.
