PM Shehbaz launches nationwide anti-polio drive

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his confidence that the Pak-EU Strategic Engagement Plan would help deepen bilateral engagement between the two sides, especially in trade, development and climate change sectors.

The PM was talking to President of the European Council Charles Michel on phone.

During the course of their conversation, the Prime Minister stressed the importance Pakistan attaches to its relationship with the European Union and reiterated his desire to further deepen and broaden the already existing bilateral cooperative ties with the EU member states.

He also recalled Pakistan’s long-standing and highly fruitful economic and trade cooperation with the EU, including through the application of the GSP Plus facility, which had enabled Pakistan to enhance its trade with the EU.

On Afghanistan, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, while also highlighting its importance and urgency of taking necessary steps to avert humanitarian and economic crises in that country.

On Ukraine, the Prime Minister spoke of his concern that the ongoing conflict had implications for the developing countries, while reaffirming Pakistan’s principled position on the issue. He urged the international community to remain engaged in the search of a diplomatic solution to the problem in accordance with the relevant multilateral agreements, international law and the UN Charter.

Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the serious situation in the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Underlining Pakistan’s commitment to promote peace in the region, including with India, the Prime Minister stressed that peaceful resolution of the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people, was indispensable for sustainable peace and security in South Asia.

He also extended a cordial invitation to the EU Council President to visit Pakistan, at an early date.

Meanwhile, the PM, chairing a meeting of National Task Force on Polio Eradication here, directed the provincial governments to fully focus on the anti-polio campaign and said there is a dire need that all the stakeholders work with renewed spirit and passion for eradication of polio virus.

He also called for collective efforts to eradicate polio from the country on urgent basis.

Shehbaz assured that the federal government would extend every possible assistance and cooperation in this regard.

On the occasion, he expressed his concerns over the detection of recent polio cases in the country.

He said all the stakeholders including federal departments, provincial governments and international organizations have rendered valuable services for eradication of polio from the country.

The PM thanked international organizations including World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for extending technical and financial support to Pakistan’s anti polio campaign.

The meeting was informed that three polio cases were reported in North Waziristan during April and May this year.

It was informed that 25 districts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are at high risk regarding the spread of polio virus.

No polio case was reported in the period between February 2021 and March 2022.

He said the partnership with international partners will continue in order to ensure complete polio eradication.

The Prime Minister launched a new anti-polio campaign by administering anti-polio drops to children.

Meanwhile, the prime minister postponed his address to the nation Due to evolving political situation.

He took this decision after consultations with senior cabinet members and party leaders.

The PM was expected to take the nation into confidence yesterday in the prevailing political and economic situation.

Now the date and time of the address will be decided next week.
