Teachers end hunger strike

QUETTA - The Government Teachers Association continued their fast unto death on the 4th day Friday to mount up pressure on the government to press their demands. Over 100 teachers from different districts participated in the hunger-strike camp established outside the Quetta Press Club. Some of them were shifted to the Civil Hospital after their condition deteriorated. The protesters chanted slogans against the government for its lethargy in redressing their grievances. Speaking on the occasion. Later, the GTA leaders called off their hunger strike. not issued a notification though it claimed that it had accepted their demands. The major demands of GTA are restructuring of time scale, elimination of the conveyance allowance deduction, and appointment of senior officials in administration. They alleged that the authorities concerned were promoting teachers on merit. They said Rs1 billion had been allocated for the provision of furniture to schools, construction and renovation but the amount had been embezzled. Due to misappropriation of funds, most of the government schools are deprived of basic facilities, the GTA leaders said, adding that they would continue their struggle for their rights.
