Bomber blows himself up to evade arrest

KARACHI - A suspected foreign militant on Friday blew himself up with explosives in his third floor flat in a residential complex of Block-13, Gulistan-e-Jauhar in Shahrah-e-Faisal Police precincts Station to avert possible arrest by security forces which raided the complex in the wee hours of Friday. Persons residing in the huge complex who were witness to the incident told The Nation that in early hours of Friday around 3:35 an explosion took place in an apartment, shortly after the heavy contingent of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) were on their way to flat, where the victim was residing along with his wife and four children including three sons and a daughter .At the time of explosion all family members were present in the flat but none of them suffered any injuries. The suspect was later identified as Abdul Moeedul Islam 36, son of Abdul Salam, resident of flat A- 306 in Rao and Israr Heights, a multistoried residential complex near Pehlwan Goth. It is pertinent to mention here that it was the second incident of suicide blast in as many days. On Thursday night in another suicide blast on Sea View front in the posh DHA residential neighborhood, seven persons five alleged terrorist and two policemen who had challenged the vehicle in which the terrorist were traveling were killed. Sources close to Rangers which launched the raid conformed that it was a targeted raid carried out on a tip-off but they did not reveal the link of suspected man to any group. They also did not give information about the weapons or valuables seized from the possession of the deceased or his family. Sources said that Rangers would give details of the raids only after investigations were completed. The officials however confirmed that the deceased suspect was a foreign national but they even did not disclose his nationality. However District East SSP Javed Alam Odho said that the victim held dual nationalities of Pakistan and US. Rangers officials also detained the children of the suspected man for questioning but the Rangers officials denied anybody was arrested or detained over the matter. They however claimed to have recovered some important documents from the flat. Although the incident occurred before 4AM, but the Rangers did not allow the residents of the building to come out of their homes and media to visit the apartment till 1 pm which raised several questions as to what the Rangers was doing inside the flat for at least seven hours and later seal the flat. However, the suspects body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. According to doctors, the suspect died due to explosive material and his left hand was totally damaged while explosion also partially damaged his abdomen. According to residents, the suspect had recently rented a flat in the building .They said they were not aware of his activities. Police officials however are of the opinion that what had happened at the flat was due to family dispute. The man and his wife had separated one-and-a-half-month ago over some domestic dispute and his children were visiting the flat for the last few days when the incident took place. There were some unconfirmed reports that the suspect was associated with the Al-Qaeda or any other militant organization but the Rangers officials concerned said that the investigation would probably be completed within a day and later the media would be briefed about the whole episode as it would premature to say anything. No case was registered till the filing of this news story.
