Bowe breaks 1,000m world record

SALT LAKE CITY - American Brittany Bowe clocked a world record of 1min 12.58sec to win the women's 1,000m Sunday on the final day of the ISU Speed Skating World Cup stop at Salt Lake City. Bowe lowered the previous record of 1:12.68 set by Canadian Christine Nesbitt in Calgary on January 28, 2012. American Heather Richardson's second-place time of 1:12.61 was also inside the previous mark. Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was third in 1:13.33. Bowe's record was just the latest in a spate of world marks in Utah this weekend. South Korea's Lee Sang-Hwa lowered her own 500m world record and the Dutch men's team pursuit squad also broke their own world record. The event is the second stop in the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in a 2013-14 season highlighted by the Sochi Winter Olympics in February.–AFP
