Islamabad - Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday condemned a terrorist attack in Afghanistan which resulted in death of senior Kandhar security officials.
“COAS condemns Kandahar incident. Wish to see Afghan and other security forces succeed in bringing an end to this prolonged violence in Afghanistan,” Inter Services Public Relations Director General Major-General Asif Ghafoor tweeted.
“Peace in Afghanistan is essential for peace in the region. (Pakistan Army) supports all initiatives towards this end,” the COAS was quoted as saying by ISPR.
Prime Minister Imran Khan also strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Kandahar said peace and security of Pakistan was inextricably linked to peace and security in Afghanistan.
Imran in a tweet posted on his twitter handle condemned the terrorist attack, targeting Kandahar’s Governor, police chief and intel chief. “Our condolences and prayers go to President Ghani, the families of the victims and the people of Afghanistan,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to a press release issued by the PM Office, the PM strongly condemned Kandahar incident. He said the people and the security forces of Afghanistan had been paying a heavy price due to continued instability and threats from the enemies of peace.
He said Pakistan stood by the government and the people of Afghanistan in their quest for lasting peace and stability. He said peace in Afghanistan was critical to the regional peace and development.
Pakistan suffered similar attacks during its own electoral process and we could feel the pain of the people of Afghanistan, he added.
Earlier Foreign Office too condemned the terrorist attack in Kandahar.
A foreign ministry statement said: “Pakistan stands with the Afghan government and people and reiterates its support for the Afghan democratic process. We hope that the parliamentary elections due to take place the day after tomorrow would be held peacefully. Strengthening of democracy is key to long term peace and security in Afghanistan.”
It added: “We also express our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and pray for swift recovery of the injured.”
