N rift leaves citizens in dirt

FSWMC may be handed over to private firm

FAISALABAD-Owing to rift between the PML-N factions, the Faisalabad Solid Waste Management Company (FSWMC) has failed to deliver as heaps of garbage are seen everywhere in the city amidst tall claims regarding anti-dengue campaign.
The Nation conducted a survey to witness the efficiency of FSWMS when majority of the city areas were seen unclean with heaps of garbage awaiting the workers. The residents of Jarnawala Road, Jhang Road, Samundari Road, Canal Road, Madina Town, Chak Jhumra Road, Ghulam Muhammad Abad Road, Peoples Colony and Sheikhupura Road said that FSWMC staff was never seen in their areas. As a result, they were living a miserable live, they said.
They alleged that the company’s sanitary workers demand wages from the people to remove garbage from their streets and if they deny the workers refuse to perform their duty for which they are getting salaries from the company.
It was witnessed that majority of city areas including Dhudiwala, Ghulam Muahmmad Abad, Madina Town, Peoples Colony, Tariqabad, Mehmoodabad locals were left on the negligence of FSWMC. A source told The Nation that FSWMC high-ups in its official meeting had confessed that the company had failed to deliver in the city. However, the source added that a proposal was considered in the meeting to hand it over to some private firm. The source said it was discussed that if FSWMC was handed over to a private firm on contract the efficiency and performance of the company can be made as per the demands of citizens.
Nowadays, many recycling plants were established in Punjab that needs garbage wastes as a source of raw material for their plants. Nevertheless, the malfunctioning of FSWMC has proved that all the directives of the Punjab government to make Faisalabad clean were not followed by the company.
CM Punjab last year on seeing the poor performance of FSWMC had nominated MNA Rana Afzal Khan as chairman of the company. Afzal worked to run the company matters smoothly and made the city clean but due to rift in the PML-N, he failed to make his dream true.
Now, MPA Fakeer Hussain Dogar has been nominated as chairman of FSWMC. It was learnt that Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan was against Rana Afzal Khan so he created hurdle in his working. MPA Fakeer Hussain Dogar belongs to Rana Sanaullah group, one of the rival group of Federal Minister Abid Sher Ali in PML-N.
Political rifts are also declared main cause of failure of FSWMC by some insiders. Therefore, PML-N workers and citizens have demanded CM Shahbaz Sharif should take notice of the worst situation and direct divisional commissioner Momin Agha and DCO Salman Ghani to carry anti-dengue and cleanliness campaign on merit basis.
