Huge 33pc hike in hydel power tariff

ISAMABAD - Nepra has approved 33percent increase in the tariff of hydel power being generated from the power projects of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) and it would be applicable with immediate effect.
Official sources told TheNation that national electric power regulatory authority (Nepra) has approved this tariff hike for running fiscal year and as a result Wapda would collect Rs57 biliion within a year.
With the effect of regulatory authority’s decision, average power tariff hike for 19 power projects of Wapda is 44 paisas and the increase in per unit price would averagely go up from Rs1.35/unit to Rs1.79/unit. After one year, power tariff of Wapda’s power projects would witness 27paisa decrease and would stand at Rs1.52/unit, the sources said.
The Nepra has approved to collect Rs11.4 billion under the head of operation and maintenance, Rs6billion profit for KPK over hydel power, Rs74 crore and 20 lakh water usages charges of Irsa, and Rs15 crore and 90 lakh for return on investment, while collection of Rs8 billion and 80 crore to reduce the revenue difference appeared during FY 2011-12 and FY2012-13 has been approved.
