Teachers protest ‘lack of promotion policy’

SWABI - Teachers of public sector educational institutions here on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government plan to appoint Senior English Teachers (SETs) and Subject Specialists (SSs) against the vacant posts on temporary basis, depriving the serving teachers of their due promotion.
The teachers gathered in the Government High School, Swabi, wherefrom they marched towards Swabi Bridge at Swabi-Jahangira road. They were raising full-throated slogans against the government plan.
The protesters were led by All CT Teachers Association (ACTA), KP, Chairman Wahab Mansori, President, Bakhat Afsar, General Secretary Qaisar Khan and District President Noor Zaman.
Teachers of various cadres participated in the protest. The protesters said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government had usually appointed SETs and SSs on temporary basis and after a few months their services were regularised.
They demanded of the government to give up this policy, as they said following it the government ignored the promotion of serving teachers. They said there was no policy of teachers’ promotion and they usually got retired in the grade on which they were appointed. They demanded a policy for promotion of teachers, saying that it was the responsibility of KP govt.
“Teachers have been waiting for promotion for many years but the government policy had killed their chances,” said Qaisar Khan to this correspondent after the protest.
“Promotion is now considered a dream by the public sector teachers. We have already met officials concerned and apprised them about the anger of the teaching community. We also made clear to them that the government strategies were not acceptable to them,” said Mr Monsori.   Addressing on the occasion Bakhat Afsar said that the government had made hue and cry about the service structure and timescale.
However, the delaying tactics created doubts among the teachers and majority of them said that hollow slogans were made by the government, dodging the teachers like the past.
