TESCOs losses

Government has hinted 3% increase in electric tariff from next month. Economic activity is touching its lowest ebb. While inflation is hovering around at 15%, the increased burden will be shifted to the masses and will cause havoc within society. Latest report of Sustainable Development Policy Initiative (SDPI), an Islamabad based think tank, regarding Tribal Area Electric Supply Company (TESCO) has stunned and left many bewildered. TESCO provides electricity to more than 4.2 million consumers of FATA. The report transpires that since 2005 Rs. 84 billion have been paid out of national kitty to cover TESCOs losses. The alarming position aggravates with the fact that per capita electric consumption in FATA is 735 units as compared to national average of 482 units. IFTIKHAR SHAHEEN MIRZA, Islamabad, March 12.
