Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani had announced many developmental projects for the socio economic uplift of Multan in the beginning of this year but we don't see any urgency here to implement these projects. The expansion of Multan Airport is a long-cherished desire of the people of Multan. Although expansion of this airport had been initiated by ex-President Farooq Ahmad Khan Laghari during his tenure, it has been stalled since. Mr Gillani can contribute positively for the socio-economic uplift of the people of Southern Punjab by completing it. He needs to link the Seraiki area with Sindh, Balochistan, NWFP and the upper Punjab through doing mega projects like this during his tenure. Unfortunately, he has totally forgotten about the developmental requirements of this region after his initial flurry of announcements. I hope the Prime Minister would issue immediate orders to expedite work on expansion of the Multan Airport so that it is brought at par with the other international airports of the country like Karachi and Lahore. Direct flights from Islamabad to Multan must also be started. If this project is followed up seriously in the interest of the region and country as a whole, Mr Gillani's name would be written in golden words in the history of Multan. -SABA GUL, Islamabad, via e-mail, November 3.
