Justice Rahmat Jafferi retires tomorrow

ISLAMABAD - Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi, a Supreme Court judge, who shot to prominence in 2000 when he handed down life sentence to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the plane hijacking case is retiring tomorrow (November 21) after attaining the age of superannuation. A full court reference would be held in this regard on Monday. Jafferi was born in Larkana on November 22, 1945. He obtained BA degree from Government College Larkana and did his LLB from the Sindh Law College, Karachi. Enrolled as an advocate at Larkana Bar Association, he worked under the guidance of his father Fakir Muhammad Jafferi, who was District Public Prosecutor Larkana from pre-partitioned days to 1965 when he retired and started private practice. Justice Rahmat Jafferi joined judiciary as a first class magistrate in 1972. In 1974, he married the daughter of Justice ZA Channa. Later, he was promoted as senior civil judge, additional sessions judge and district and sessions judge. Jafferi served in various districts of Sindh and was appointed the Sindh High Court (SHC) Registrar. He worked on the separation of the judiciary from the executive during his posting as the District and Sessions Judge in Hyderabad from 1992 to 1995. He was appointed the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts, Karachi Division, on May 7, 1999. During the tenure of his service, he ruled on various important cases, one being the plane hijacking case against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Although the SHC had upheld the sentence, the Supreme Court quashed the conviction on July 18 2009. He was elevated to the SHC as an ad hoc judge on August 27, 2002 and was confirmed on August 27, 2003. He was appointed the Supreme Court judge on September 7, 2009.
