BAJAUR AGENCY - Mortars fired from the Afghan side of the border killed a girl and injured three others in tehsil Nawagi of Bajaur tribal region on Monday.A woman and a child were among three injured. Locals said four mortars were fired from across the border at the Hilal Khail Charmang, a border village of Nawagi tehsil, 40km from the Agency headquarters Khar.The residents said that five-year-old Fitima bibi was killed on the spot while three people including Gull Haia bibi, Inamullah Khan and Mohammad Iqbal were seriously wounded. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment where conditions of the two were stated to be critical.“The rockets landed at the houses of locals. One of the houses was completely destroyed while another was partially damaged,” said Hayat Khan, a resident of the area.The local administration has confirmed the mortar attack at the border area of the region. “The militants living inside Afghanistan could be responsible for the attack,” the official added. Meanwhile, the tribal elders of Nawagi tribe have expressed concern over the attack at the border village of the area warning that tribesmen will have to retaliate if cross-border attacks continue.Agencies add: “Terrorists fired a mortar round from Ganjgil Top on the Afghanistan side at 2:30 pm,” a security official said.The mortar hit a house in Hilal Khel village of Bajaur Agency, killing a child, he said. A child and a woman were also injured in the same area. Security officials said Pakistan would lodge a protest with the Afghan government over the incident. This was the latest incident of cross-border firing that has heightened tensions between Islamabad and Kabul.
