Sindh prisons are overcrowded, admits Wassan

KARACHI – Sindh Prisons Minister Manzoor Hussain Wassan has said that the prisons of Sindh are overcrowded as against the total capacity of 11,937, the number of prisoners lodged in 26 jails across the province is 13,833.Talking to media after presiding over a meeting about the prisons at his office on Monday, he said the number of high profile prisoners lodged in jails was 117 while 258 prisoners were being tried inside the jails.Wassan said steps were being taken to pay the uniform allowance to the jail employees along with their salaries.Earlier, presiding over the meeting minister ordered cancellation of earlier tenders and inviting new one for provision of better facilities including to the jail inmates. “I myself will visit the jails to check if the inmates are provided with food and other facilities as per jail manual,” he added.Wassan further instructed that besides sports facilities and skill development, arrangements should also be made for observing religious events. He directed for arranging mourning congregations in jails during Muharamul Haram. Minister directed further for ensuring security of jails as well as of jail staff. IG Jails Zafar Bukhari, Special Secretary Jails Ali Hassan Brohi and superintendents of all 26 jails attended the meeting.THREE GUNNED DOWN: Three people were gunned down in separate incidents of violence in different parts of the metropolis on Monday. A man was gunned down in Mehran Town in Korangi Industrial Area police precincts.Police said that the victim namely Ameer, 65, was shot dead in his home by his close relative. Police reached the spot and shifted the body to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medicolegal formalities and later handed over to his heirs. Police said the victims’ relative namely Bhoola was involved in his murder and had a personal dispute. The culprit managed to flee from the scene but they also registered a case against him. Another man was gunned down in Khuda Ki Basti area within the remits of Surjani police station.Police said the victim identified as Syed Adnan, 32, was sitting near his residence when unidentified armed riders came close to him and sprayed bullets on him. Resultantly, he died on the spot.  Police shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for postmortem and later handed over to his family. Police suspected personal enmity behind the killing. Moreover, an alleged bandit was shot dead at Maripur Road within the jurisdiction of Kalri police station.Police said that two unidentified bandits were busy looting valuable stuff from citizens when locals of the area tried to intercept the bandits and opened fire on them. Resultantly one of them sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot while another managed to flee from the scene. After getting information, police rushed to the scene and recovered a TT pistol from their possession and later shifted the body to Civil Hospital for autopsy.
