KARACHI - Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Friday said that cleaning of drains on both sides of Jahangir Road will be completed within a week.
“As soon as the cleaning process is completed, the construction of the road will start. If the sewerage and drainage work is not done before road construction, this road will be damaged within a month. The construction of Jahangir Road will be completed in the shortest possible time,” the Administrator said while presiding over a high level meeting about construction of Jahangir Road.
Metropolitan Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, MD Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Asadullah Khan, Deputy Commissioner East Asif Jan, Administrator DMC East Rehmatullah Sheikh, Senior Director Municipal Services Mazhar Khan, officials of KMC Engineering Department and PWD were also present on the occasion. The Administrator Karachi asked the KWSB and DMC East officials to assist in cleaning of drain and construction of road so that construction of Jahangir Road could be completed immediately. “This is a very important road and thousands of citizens face problems on a daily basis,” he added. He said that a wall of 1 to 1.5 feet should be constructed on both the sides of the drain so that garbage and rubbish could not enter the drain.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab asked Managing Director of KW&SB Asadullah Khan to provide technical support. He said that people had also laid sewerage lines in the rain drains on both the sides of Jahangir Road.
“Jahangir Road is 4,000 feet long and has a 1.25-km long nullah on both sides,” he added.
The Administrator said that the sewerage and drainage work was being completed before all road construction in Karachi. He said that there was scope for improving Karachi’s infrastructure, however, the Sindh government is trying to keep the main arteries in good condition so that the flow of traffic can be maintained.
He said that construction of several major roads in different parts of the city has been completed in last six months and work on Sher Shah Road and other roads in the site area from Machli Chowk to KANUPP is still in progress. Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that work on Shahra-e-Noor Jahan and Jahangir Road was being started immediately and full steps were being taken to develop the city.
Meanwhile, Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Friday said that the next session of Sindh Assembly will approve the charter for granting university status to Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC). “If we do not make our own decisions, other institutions make their own decisions and influence them. The college should operate independently and all decisions must be subject to the approval of the governing body, the Administrator expressed these views while presiding over a meeting as the Chairman of the Governing Body of Karachi Medical and Dental College here.
The meeting was attended by Metropolitan Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, Principal KMC Prof Sultan Mustafa, Financial Advisor KMDC Imtiaz Ali Abro, Senior Director Medical Services Abdul Hameed Jamani, Governing Body members Prof Qaiser Jamal, Kishwer Zehra, Shehla Raza, Prof Farid A. Dayo, Mohammad Idrees, Dr. Zubeida Wasim Qazi, Dr. Farhan Issa, Dr. Akmal Waheed, Prof. Syed Shiraz Hussain, Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin and Prof Dr Syed Shah.
Barrister Murtaza said that the mismanagement in the financial affairs of the college in the past will be investigated and no cash will be collected in any way.
He said that in the future, fees and other dues would be collected through bank.
He said that fees for admission of overseas Pakistani students should also be collected in the form of pay order.
The Administrator said that the admission of students from Dubai, Sri Lanka and other countries in the college has boosted the confidence.
He said that the students who graduated from this college are now serving humanity with their full potential all over the world, which is commendable.
The governing body has decided that past and present students who have college arrears will not be awarded degrees and original certificates until they have paid all the dues of the college.
It was also decided that a letter will be written to Karachi University and Higher Education Commission to suspend the degree of the students who have obtained degrees from the college and have not paid the fees.
The governing body also decided to set up a committee consisting of members of the governing body Shehla Raza, Kishwer Zehra and Dr. Farhan Issa to provide scholarships to the students.
No scholarships will be given without approval of the committee. The committee will also decide to reduce the fee and give a discount.
The Administrator Karachi said that he has done his best to upgrade the college into university as promised.
“Sindh Cabinet has approved to make this college a university. Sindh Assembly would also approve its upgradation,” he added.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that poor and middle class students are studying in this medical college and it is our responsibility to provide them the best education.
He said that the field of medicine is very important because it is related to human health so we have to create a better ‘Massihas’ of the future.
The governing body also approved the appointment of Dr. Nargis Anjum as the principal of the college on the basis of seniority as per the decision of the court.
The Administrator Karachi suggested that a meeting of the governing body be held every two months so that timely decisions could be taken which was unanimously supported by the members of governing body.
The meeting also discussed issues related to improvement of hostels, better management of transport for students, transparency of financial affairs and timely payment of salaries of college teachers.
