Govt grants 90-day remission to prisoners on Eid

ISLAMABAD - The federal government on Saturday granted special remission of 90 days to the prisoners across the country on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Ministry of Interior has written a letter to home departments of all four provinces and Gilgit-Baltistan that special remission, with some few exceptions, should be given to the prisoners under the powers conferred on the President by Article 45 of the Constitution.

The letter has been sent to Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The letter said that the 90-day remission would also be applicable to prisoners facing life imprisonment. The remission policy will be for all those male prisoners over 65 years of age and female prisoners over 60 years of age who have completed one-third part of their sentence, it added.

The letter further says that the remission will be for those juvenile prisoners who are less than 18 years of age and have also completed one-third part of their sentence.

The special remission policy will not be applicable for those prisoners convicted of espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, and terrorism including sectarian terrorism. Those who have been convicted either on charges of financial embezzlement or inflicting loss to the nationality also would not be able to avail the facility.

The Interior Ministry has issued instructions to implement the remission policy immediately.
