MNA Aamir Liaquat Hussain found dead at home in Karachi

KARACHI    -   Renowned TV host and politician Aamir Liaquat Hussain was found dead at his residence in Karachi’s Khudadad Colony on Thursday, police said.


Police are investigating the sudden death of 50-year-old Hussain, who was also Member of the National Assembly and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He is survived by a son and a daughter.


DIG East Muqaddas Haider confirmed his death late Thursday. While talking to reporters he said the cause of the death could not be ascertained.


Chiipa Rescue Service officials told The Nation that they shifted the MNA’s to a private hospital where he was declared dead.


SSP East Abdul Rahim Shirazi and Crime Scene Department visited Aamir Liaquat’s house to collect evidences. The police officers say that the postmortem of the body would be conducted at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre to determine the cause of death.


Shirazi said that the details of the items seized from the house of the deceased could not be shared with media persons. All these ‘items are part of the investigation, he added. The DIG told reporters that the cause of death would be ascertained only after an autopsy.


The police also initiated probe into the mysterious death after taking Aamir Liaquat’s mobile phone and tablet into custody for interrogation. The CCTV footages of cameras installed around the MNA’s home would also be acquired. The police investigators also met Aamir Liaquat’s first wife. A medical board was formed for the postmortem which now will be done after the arrival of his son.


Reportedly, the PTI leader was found unconscious at his home in Khudadad Colony and shifted to a private hospital in a critical condition. Reports indicate Hussain felt discomfort on Wednesday night, however, he refused to go to the hospital.


Javed, Liaquat’s employee said a scream was heard from Liaquat’s room Thursday morning. The room was locked from the inside. When there was no response from the other end, his domestic staff broke down his room’s door. Afterwards, the doctors said that Liaquat was dead when he was brought to the hospital.


Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who was listed thrice in The Most Influential 500 Muslims, was born on 5th July 1971. He was first elected as MNA on Muttahida Qaumi Movement and went to become Minister for Religious Affairs. However in 2007, the party asked him to step down as the minister as well as MNA over differences.


After few years, he rejoined the MQM and was the only party member who came up with lame excuses to defend Altaf Hussain over his controversial remarks on 22nd August 2016 on which he was detained by the Rangers for a few hours.


On the very next day, Aamir Liaquat Hussain announced quitting politics forever. His announcement, however did not last for long as he joined the PTI in March 2018.
