ISLAMABAD - Top seed Britain’s Ahmed Zyaan of Pakistani origin got off to a winning start in the Syed Tajammul Abbas ITF Pakistan World Junior Ranking Tennis Championship 2018 when he edged past local lad Hamza Bin Rehan 7-6(2), 6-3 in the second round match played here at Senator Dilawar Abbas PTF Complex on Tuesday.
While Pakistan’s Huzafia Abdul Rehman and M Shoaib, Saqib Hayat, Chen Wei Chen of Chinese Taipei, Thailand’s Rattanan Siritaworchar, Canada’s Faisal Ghous and Malaysia’s Suresh Darrshan also moved into the quarterfinals after carving out contrasting victories against their respective opponents.
Unseeded M Shoaib, who is dubbed by many as future of Pakistan tennis, stunned Indian third seed Neema Arthav in straight sets. Shoaib completely outclassed his superior and experienced opponent playing awesome tennis from the baseline and demolished Arthav in all departments of the game. Shoaib won the first set 6-1 after breaking the second, fourth and sixth games of Arthav while he continued his good form in the second set, winning it by 6-2 by breaking second and fourth games of his opponent. Shoaib was in excellent form and did not allow his opponent to settle down throughout the match with his crosscourt forehand and backhand shots. After losing the match, Arthav broke his racket and got panelised from ITF supervisor.
Top seed Ahmed Zyaan of UK eliminated Hamza Bin Rehan in a well-contested two-set match. Hamza fought his heart out in the first set and never let Zyaan dictate terms, but after playing so well and taking the set into tie-break, he lost the set 6-7 (2). Hamza started the second set on same passion, but he ran out of gas and lost it 3-6.
Second seed Suresh Darrshan of Malaysia eliminated Moosa Chourhry 6-1, 6-2. Qualifier Huzafia Abdul Rehman upset 6th seed Nouman Aftab 6-3, 6-4 while Saqib Hayat of Pakistan also moved into the quarterfinals by winning his match against Wen Yi Chou (TPE) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Rattanan Siritaworchar of Thailand won against Ahmed Asjad Qureshi in thrilling three set match. Asjad was leading 5-2 in the final set, but could not maintain the pace, while Thai player not only leveled the score but also won the match in tie breaker. Faisal Ghous of Canada registered straight sets win against Sami Zeb of Pakistan and Chen Wei Chen (TPE) beat Zalan Khan (PAK) 6-1, 6-1.
In girls’ doubles quarterfinals, Mert Aysegul (TUR)/Toglukdemir Mina (TUR) beat Shimza Durab (PAK)/Srujana Rayarala (IND) 6-0, 6-3; Aksu Semra (TUR)/Bilgic Sedef (TUR) beat Nida Akram (PAK)/ Zahara Suleman (PAK) 6-0, 6-0 and Ozseker Sevval (TUR)/Piwbangruk Natthapat (THA) w/o Zoha Asim (PAK)/Lajos Anna (HUN).
The boys’ singles and girls’ singles quarterfinals will be played today (Wednesday) here at 10am while the girls doubles semi-finals will be contested at 1:30pm and boys’ doubles quarterfinals at 2:30pm.
