Insecure polio squads

KARACHI - Polio teams deployed in sensitive areas with a history of attacks on polio volunteers are looking for security to continue their mission.
About 24 teams were carrying  out a three-day anti-polio drive that began Monday across Sindh province including Karachi. 
It was revealed that deployment of the police personnels for the security of polio workers was not made in various areas of District West, Malir and South.
Polio teams pointed out sensitive Union councils including Gadap, Baldia Town, Malir, Lyari, Bin Qasim Town and urged the Health department ensure police security in the volatile areas.
Provincial government completing the security plan for the polio workers had formed monitoring cell at Chief Minister House Sindh.
According to the sources lack of the security for the polio team has halted the drive in various parts of the city while the police have not finalised security plan.
The above mentioned areas have a past of polio workers being attacked several times which led to the cancellation of polio campaigns. In year 2012 four health workers during an anti-polio drive were killed in the said areas of the city.
All arrangement to inoculate the city`s children in the first anti-polio campaign of year 2014 has been made said Dr Zafar Ijaz, Executive District Officer (EDO) Health in the city. He said there were some areas, particularly in the Gadap, Baldia and Gulshan-i-Iqbal neighbourhoods, which had been termed as sensitive. “Distorting law and order situation of the city has raised fears in the polio workers but we are confident,” he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Dr Ishrtual Ebad Khan taking notice of obstacles in polio drive in various Union Councils has directed Sectary Health and IG Sindh to take immediate action. He further directed Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui to take all measures for the successfully completion of the drive.
Peshawar Reporter adds: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Engineer Shaukatullah administered polio vaccination drops to the children to launch three-day anti-polio vaccination campaign in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata ).
The governor asked relevant authorities to ensure polio vaccination to each and every child in the area. Additional Chief Secretary of  Arbab Muhammad Arif, Director Health Federally Administered Tribal Areas  Dr Parvaiz Kamal Khan, representatives of WHO and UNICEF and other relevant authorities were also present on the occasion.
The governor was told that more than 2000 teams have been formed to administer polio drops to as many as 707,2048 children aged below five years, The governor directed relevant authorities, health workers and volunteers to leave no stone unturned in reaching every child to eradicate the disease so that no more young ones are handicapped for life.
