The not-so-coveted title

Sometimes it’s better to be the bottom of the table or not in the list at all. While that may sound ludicrous when talking of a sports or academic competition; the race for an Olympic gold medal or the list of countries with highest literacy rate; it sounds more prudent when the table is that of ‘World's Top Consumers of Pornography’ – a title every country would like to avoid. But of course, that cannot discourage us Pakistanis for we often like to be a little unconventional.

According to a latest Google data release, Pakistan unsurprisingly tops the list of ''most porn-loving countries in the world'', again. The runners-up are also Muslim countries showcasing that the problem isn't circumscribed to Pakistan only but is spread across the Muslim world. Keeping in view their (the residents of these countries) vociferous support and profound fondness for modesty and their track record of vehement tirade against 'anti-Hijab’ and ‘head-scarf’ laws in the West (France to be specific), the news comes with an instant but dormant shock – dormant because it’s not the first time we are sitting on this throne.

The categories mentioned in the report as searched by the Pakistani Internet users ranged from bestiality (intercourse between a human and an animal), to molestation (sexual child abuse). Both the aforementioned searched terms confirm the youths' exhaustive gazing at other common, natural and much popular categories of nude videos, subjecting them to boredom of a special kind and propelling them to their self-inflicted compulsion to watch something new.

It also includes ‘rape’- a category alien even to the producers of porn videos. These search words show the mindset of the Pakistani youth online and their moral depravity. It also shows their proclivity towards violence and inclination to unnatural activities.

It must also be kept in mind that the report comes at a time when the PTA has banned porn material and one needs a proxy or unlocking software to access porn-sites in Pakistan – a hard nut to crack indeed for a common Internet user. In doing so, the proxy makes the viewer appear from elsewhere and not Pakistan. This further suggests that the actual number may be even higher than reported and the situation all the more alarming.

There are a number of factors which could explain the proclivity of Pakistani Internet users for porn-sites. They may include boredom, anxiety, depression, loneliness, sexual repression, lack of education, paucity of recreational activities and shortfall of creative thinking or inability to channelize one's energy in a positive direction, etc.

While the not-so-coveted title didn't come as a surprise, judging from the response of the Pakistani folk to the report on the social media and elsewhere, one could safely infer that either a majority of them are too naive not to have searched the porn-sites themselves or sanctimoniously hypocrite to admit it.

While the country stands on the top of the list, only a few were honest enough to admit it. One couldn't see even a minimal few stating the obvious reasons. A majority of them termed it blatant western propaganda against Pakistan. Some of them called it Jewish conspiracy defaming Islam and still others suggesting it to be a technical error in the website(s) providing inaccurate data, leading to faulty conclusion.

The most hilarious argument was put forward by one of the commenters who questioned as to why would the producers make such material in the first place and put it online.

While the validity of the report has been questioned by many (and I hope the theory skeptical of its veracity prevails), it isn't a secret that most of the Pakistani youth have a dangerous and threatening addiction to porn. Most of the viewers think of it as a substitute for sex, while the reality is quite different. The former is a natural act and human need while the latter is a useless activity often transformed into addiction which makes you lazy and weak, both physically and mentally.

Sex is one of the basic human necessities. Sexual desires are hard to suppress and finding sexual gratification without harming others is logically acceptable but blaming our acts on others and absolving ourselves of all responsibility isn't a sign of a healthy mind. We should try to rectify whatever is wrong with us rather than ignoring the fault altogether.

It’s time to stop searching for shades of Western propaganda and Jewish conspiracy in loathsome, disgusting and detestable behavior of our own. Blaming them isn't the solution. Competing with them constructively is.

As a Pakistani, it’s heart-wrenching to see people addressing Pakistan with condescending titles linked to the masses’ addiction with porn. It is even more disturbing to find that the future assets, the youth of Pakistan, is involved in useless activities.

This time we topped the list for an undesirable crown. Let’s hope, the next time we top a list, it’s that of ‘The most religiously tolerant countries in the world’ or the like.
