Star of day one

Khurram finally gets it right Going into the final Test of the series there was some pressure on young opener Khurram Manzoor. He has failed to deliver in the series so far with scores of 2, 15, 3 and 38. Selectors persisted with him for the final Test and he repaid their faith with a fine knock. Sri Lanka inserted Pakistan in under overcast conditions. Two wickets in one over hampered Pakistan's charge but then Khurram Manzoor continued to bat sensibly as he knitted a much needed partnership for the third wicket with Mohammad Yousuf. Khurram struggled at times but didn't lost control completely as he reached his second Test fifty off 85 balls. Khurram's partnership with Yousuf was so complete that no wicket fell between lunch and tea - first time that has happened in a session in this series. Khurram was playing all the batsmen comfortably and the looked all set to complete his maiden Test hundred but the nervous nineties got to him. He poked at an outgoing delivery of Chaminda Vaas to be caught in slips for 93. His innings lasted for 197 balls and included 10 hits across the fence. The century was very much there for the taking but a lapse of concentration saw him miss out. His partnership of 167 runs for the third wicket with Mohammad Yousuf saw Pakistan to a position of strength by stumps. It was a good knock but it would have been much better had he been able to complete his hundred. But definitely it would have been a big morale booster for Khurram.
