Petition seeks Musharraf be barred from travelling abroad

A petition has been filed in Supreme Court asking it to direct the government to include former President Pervez Musharraf's name in a list of persons barred from travelling out of the country. Advocate Tariq Asad filed the petition on Friday on behalf of Akmal Saleemi, who said the apex court should direct the interior ministry to include Musharraf's name in the Exit Control List. The petition said this should be done so that Musharraf "may not be able to leave Pakistan and escape from the expected trial and conviction for having committed the offences of murders and high treason". Mr. Saleemi claimed that the former army chief had been advised by his aides to leave the county as the case related to the army operation against the Lal Masjid could be heard following the reinstatement of deposed Supreme Court Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. The petition alleged Mr. Musharraf was responsible for the killing of innocent people in the Lal Masjid operation. About 100 people were killed when the army conducted an operation against radical elements and militants holed up in the Lal Masjid in the heart of Islamabad in mid-2007. Mr. Musharraf was army chief at the time.
