Heavy rain leaves many roads, streets inundated in Rawalpindi

Committee Chowk underpass flooding causes massive traffic jam

Rawalpindi   -  A heavy rain on Monday left many roads and streets of the city inundated here on Monday, causing immense troubles for the commuters and pedestrians.

Flooding was reported on Murree Road, Committee Chowk underpass, Mareer Chowk, Kashmir Road, Saddar, Pirwadhai Morr Underpass, IJ Road, Rashid Minhas Road, GT Road near Ayub Park and Fauji Foundation Hospital, Adyala Road and many other localities of the city, causing a gigantic traffic jam. In many localities, the WAPDA suspended electricity supply. Business activities remained slow during the torrential rain.

Dozens of motorcyclists were seen taking shelter under the Committee Chowk underpass causing a massive traffic jam on Murree Road.

Similarly, scores of vehicles struck in rain water on Murree Road while pedestrians could be seen wading through knee-deep water.

According to the Met Office, Saidpur Village received 6mm rain; Golra 36mm, Bokra 1mm; PMD 30mm; Shamasabad 29mm and Chaklala 30mm.

The water level in Nullah Leh was reported 5 feet at Kattarian Bridge while 4 feet at Gawalmandi, according to officials of the district government.

All the civic agencies including Water and Sanitation Agency, Tehsil Municipal administration, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board and Chaklala Cantonment Board as well as City Traffic Police were also inundated with complaints of flooded roads, choked sewerage systems and slow moving traffic.

In a bid to resolve the public complaints, the officials and sanitary staff of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), following the instructions of Managing Director (MD) Raja Shaukat, came into action along with heavy machinery and pumped out water from roads to facilitate the commuters.

Similarly, the wardens of City Traffic Police could be seen on roads during heavy rain to ease the traffic flow.

Reportedly, rain water also entered into houses in Javed Colony and suburbs.

“Several parts of Adyala Road have been dug up by many departments either to bury pipe lines of cables. This is one of the reasons for flooding in this area, “said Amir Shehzad, a citizen.

Talking to media men, WASA spokesman said the chief of the civic body sent all the staff to the field to facilitate the citizens. He said the head of WASA along with other officers also monitored the situation in the city. He said WASA had also inaugurated the facilitation centre for consumers at Kattarian Market in F Block Satellite Town. Vice Chairman RDA/WASA Haroon Kamal Hashmi inaugurated the facilitation centre, he added.

The purpose of setting up facilitation centre in the areas is to resolve the public issues about water billing and sewerage.

Meanwhile, a 40-year old drug addict drowned into Mashroot Dam while swimming. Rescue 1122 divers fished out the body of the unknown man and moved it to hospital for autopsy. Police have mentioned the occurrence of the incident in the daily crime register, according to a police spokesman of police.
