NA fails to take up agenda items

ISLAMABAD - The opposition, for the second consecutive day, on Monday managed to disrupt proceedings of the National Assembly by taking advantage of lack of required quorum in the House.

The opposition, sensing lack of required strength soon after Question-Hour session, made an attempt to point out quorum but the chair, before going into the process of counting, adjourned the proceedings.

The second day of the fourth parliamentary session could not take up the agenda and House proceedings were abruptly adjourned. The House with the start of the proceedings saw very thin presence from both sides of the aisle.  However, the members from both sides agreed to hold a debate over recent increase in petroleum products.  Earlier, the House unanimously passed a condolence resolution paying tribute to services of veteran Baloch leader Ataullah Mengal. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan presented the resolution.

Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Dr Fehmida Mirza, in Question-Hour, said that government was taking steps to improve sports governance structure in the country and performance of athletes. “Lack of sports governance structure is affecting the future of children in sports sector,” she said, adding that National Sports Policy is being devised to promote sports at the grass root level and prepare a new talent for international events. She said the government was also making playgrounds at Tehsil level to provide better playing facilities to youth.

To another question, Parliamentary Secretary of Interior Shaukat Ali said a special directorate of sanitation and water supply was working in the Capital Development Authority to ensure cleanliness in Islamabad.

Earlier, the journalists staged walkout from the House for locking the press gallery for journalists on the day of joint sitting.
