Narcotics trade booms in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi - The narcotics business is flourishing in several areas within the precincts of police station Waris Khan without any check by police or any other law enforcement agency.
The open sale of narcotics is risking the lives of hundreds of youth who are rapidly becoming drug addicts, reliable sources and locals disclosed to The Nation on Tuesday.
They said that locals have made several complaints with Police Station Waris Khan officials but no action has been taken against the drug sellers so far whereas some police officials are also sheltering the drug sellers, something seeking strong attention of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja, City Police Officer (CPO) Israr Ahmed Khan Abbasi and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Waris Khan Circle Behram Khan.
According to well-placed sources, the business of hashish and liquor selling has been going unchecked in many areas of Waris Khan. These areas included Dhoke Khabba, Dhoke Farman Ali, Dhoke Elahi Bux, Post Office’s Street, Sunyara Wali Street and street number 7 near Abdullah Mosque.
The sources added that a large number of corrupt police officials posted at Waris Khan police station received bribe from the drug dens and provide them shelter. They mentioned that locals lodged many complaints with PS Waris Khan but no action was taken against the drug sellers.
A local who has been living in Post Office’s Street for the last 20 years told this scribe on condition of anonymity that the drugs were being sold in his street and other adjoining areas without any fear. He added that college and school going children were becoming drug addicts because of easy availability of narcotics. He said that locals brought the matter into the notice of PS Waris Khan but all in vain. He demanded of the RPO and CPO to take action against the drug dealers and those cops who were protecting the drug dens in return of bribe.
“I will not allow anybody to sell drugs in my jurisdiction and will launch a massive crackdown to wipe out the drug dens from the areas,” said ASP Waris Khan Circle Behram Khan when contacted by this scribe to know his official version. He added that he was focusing on Dhoke Elahi Bux and Dhoke Khabba to make them crime free zone.
He said that action would also be taken against the cops who were allegedly shielding the drug dens.
