Munter puts off visit as students protest

PESHAWAR - Following protest by students, US Ambassador Cameron Munter cancelled his visit to the Peshawar University on Wednesday.
Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) students staged a demonstration against the US envoy’s planned visit to the varsity.
The protesters, led by IJT Nazim Mian Suhaibuddin Kakakhel, General Secretary Shah Zaman Durrani, and Muhammad Aqeel, gathered at Zero Point near New Academic Block and marched towards main Jamrud Road.
Campus police stopped them in front of Khyber Medical Collage. According to IJT, several students sustained wounds when the police batoncharged the protesters and dozens were arrested.
Later, the IJT activists reached Peshawar Press Club to condemn the arrest of their fellows.
They said they were staging peaceful protest but the campus police used force against them. They demanded suspension of campus SHO and release of detained students. To avoid untoward incident, Munter’s visit was postponed.
