JI terms new LG bill violation of Article 140-A

KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami has rejected the new Local Government draft, terming it a sheer violation of the Article 140-A of the Constitution. Former city nazim and a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Naimatullah Khan advocate has expressed these views while addressing a press conference at Idara-e-Noor Haq here on Thursday.
JI Karachi chief Hussain Mehanti, Naib Ameers Nasrullah Shajih, Raja Arif Sultan, Ameer JI District Central Farooq Naimatullah Khan and others were also present on the occasion. Addressing a press conference, Naimatullah termed the said step of the government against the constitution, as there was a concept of third tier of the government after the federal and provincial governments in the Constitution, which had financial and administrative powers with it. The commissions and boards have also been formed above the LG system which will be control by the provincial government.
“In the new LG draft, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and Karachi Building Control Authority have also given under the control of Minister for Local Bodies which is tantamount to an unjust act with the people and the elected representatives of the city,” he added. He further informed that the provincial government did not hold any consultation with the JI leadership before presenting the said LG Bill in Sindh Assembly.
“Despite the fact that the JI leaders had served as a city mayor for two times and city nazim for once, the provincial government did not contact with the JI in formulation of new LG draft,” he added.
“It is a conspiracy to shift powers and authorities from City District Government to Sindh government,” he added.
