Mehsud jirga seeks strict action against cops

KARACHI - Mehsud tribe jirga on Monday demanded strict action against police officials involved in Naqeebullah’s extrajudicial killing.

The jirga was held on request of Naqeebullah Mehsud`s father Khan Muhammad and the victim family reached Karachi amid strict security arrangement. Naqeeb family, various political leaders and social activists reached Sohrab Goth to attend Mehsud tribe jirga.

The participants of the jirga condemned the extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and demanded of the Chief Justice of Pakistan and provincial and federal governments to provide justice to victim’s family.

The jirga members said that they would continue their struggle till the punishment to perpetrators of the fake encounter.

On the occasion, Naqeebullah`s brother Fareedullah said that his brother was a peaceful man and never had any connection with any terrorist organization. “My brother only fault is that he belongs to a tribal area. Naqeeb’s murder has disturbed entire family and we want justice at any cost,” he said.

“Police demanded for Rs 7million for release of Naqeeb but we are poor people have no such big amount,” he added.

He asked the jirga participants to pool their efforts to ensure justice.

Addressing the participants of jirga, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Haleem Adil Sheikh said that injustice to people should brought to an end.

 “Encounter specialist Rao Anwar during his service has killed numbers of innocent people under the guise of killing terrorists. On one hand the political interferences has ruined entire police department while on the other some police officials have been given licence to kill innocent people claiming them terrorists,” he added.

Talking to journalists, Naqeebullah’s father Khan Muhammad said his son was interested in modeling and had no links with any militant organizations.

He demanded of the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Army Chief to provide justice.

Meanwhile, protest demonstrations to condemn Naqeebullah’s extrajudicial killing continued in the city. Students of Karachi University staged a demonstration at Silver Jubilee gate and demanded justice for victims’ family. They were carrying placards, banners and picture of Naqeebullha.

The participants said that killing of innocent young man from Waziristan had placed a big question mark on performance of police department.

They said that across the world the accused has to be presented before the court within 24 hours but in Pakistan it is unfortunate that police are practicing illegal acts.

Terming the encounter suspicious, they said that no evidence pertaining to Naqeebullah`s involvement in terrorism was found but the young man was executed in a fake encounter.

They demanded formation of a high-level committee to probe the killing and provide justice to the victim`s family.
