LAHORE Once again reposing confidence upon former Pakistan Railways General Manager Operation and member of Federal Government Inspector of Railway, Federal government has reappointed Saeed Akhtar as General Manager of Pakistan Railways pinning hope that he would once again convert the cash-stripped department into a profit-oriented entity by running the organisation with professional and corporate manners. He replaced Ashfaq Khattak. According to detail, Saeed Akhtar passed his graduated from Jhang and got through Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore in 1975 along with Diploma in Transportation from Karachi University in 1985. He has the distinction that he is the sole person in PR who possesses another degree of Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) that he passed in 1995. Before joining Pakistan Railways in 1977, he served Nespak in year 1975-76. He has wide experience of field work as he served four major divisions of PR including Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Multan. He has rich experience in restructuring and privatisation of Pakistan Railway as he remained associated with all initiatives taken in this regard since 1995. He performed in Ministry of Railway as Director Technical and had distinction of drafting 'Pakistan Railway Corporatisation Bill.. He also took steps to instigate the MIS/FIS project aiming to convert existing accounting to corporate accounting followed by introducing costing. Besides this, he was the first Project Director of Track Dualisation project. He started the project from scratch and its first phase that ranged from Lodhran to Khanewal completed within targeted time and budget. The project remained under his supervision even after he resumed the charge of Additional General Manager/Infrastructure and as General Manager/Operations. Under his supervision, the track dualisation project completed up to Sahiwal. After working as Additional General Manager and Federal Government Inspector of Railway, he was posted as General Manager Operation in 2009. He has worked as General Manager Operation for about one year and successfully controlled steep declining trend of revenues.
