Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said ten personnel of Pakistan Navy including an Officer were killed in fighting with militants who raided PNS Mehran base on Sunday night. He said during the operation, a suicide jacket, rocket launchers, hand grenades and sophisticated ammunition was recovered from the dead militants. He said four of the six militants who were involved in the armed raid on Pakistan's Naval air base have been eliminated in the retaliatory operation by the security forces while two managed to escape. Talking to media persons here at the Chief Minister House after the operation was over, the Interior Minister put the number of martyred armed forces personnel at 10 and the injured at 15. He said the martyred troops would be awarded Sitara-e-Shujaat posthumously. The Interior Minister said laced with sophisticated weapons, six or seven militants, aged between 20 and 25 years, made their way into the PNS Mehran by climbing over the boundary wall and targeted P-3C Orion aircraft. He said the attackers looked like foreigners. He said attack at Mehran base was an attack on Pakistan as the enemies of the country wants to destabilize it. He said all of us would have to confront them by joining hands. He said immediately after the terrorists attack at Mehran base, he was directed by the President and the Prime Minister to rush to Karachi. He said the counter operation was carried out under the leadership of Pakistan Navy's commandos while rangers also took part. He said he was sorry to listen the statements of certain people over the killing of bin Laden and Mehran base incident. He said these are the people who are encouraging those who want to destabilize the country. He appealed every one not to criticize the law enforcement institutions as it is not time of leveling allegations but joining hands for the security of the country. He saluted Lt Yasser under whose leadership Commandos confronted the terrorists. He said Lt Yasser gave his life and saved the lives of other citizens. He said among those who sacrificed their lives also include two officers of SSG Navy, three firemen and three ranger personnel. He termed as baseless reports that terrorists made hostage to navy personnel. He said there were seventeen foreigners at the Mehran base including six American and eleven Chinese nationals who remained safe. He said a joint investigation would be carried out into the attack. He said it is known that after the killing of Osama, Taliban held a meeting in Waziristan during which they planned attacks at military installations, sensitive institutions and to target important personalities. He said the Interior Ministry has warned all concerned in this connection.
