Chaudhry Nisar to take oath as Punjab MPA on May 24

Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan plans to take oath of his seat on Monday during session of Punjab Assembly.

Chaudhry Nisar, a former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart, contested the 2018 general elections as an independent candidate from two national and two provincial assemblies after developing differences with the Sharif family.

He said the development does not mean any change in stance and narrative about 2018 general elections. He also announced not to take any benefits including salary and TADA.

Chaudhry Nisar had earlier denied reports that he will take the oath, saying that he had no such intention and that there was no truth in the rumors circulating in certain quarters.

In the 2018 general elections, Chaudhry Nisar was elected as an independent member of the Punjab Assembly from PP-10 Rawalpindi. However, he did not take the oath of the provincial assembly seat.

It may be recalled that the Cabinet Committee on Legislation had passed an amendment to the Election Act 2017, according to which a seat will become vacant if the elected representative does not take oath within 60 days. Following the issuance of the ordinance, the Election Commission will de-notify such representatives.
