QUETTA -  A local court on Saturday exonerated Member Balochistan Assembly Abdul Majeed Khan Achakzai in vehicle tampering case relating to a traffic incident that resulted in death of a traffic sergeant in Quetta, over lack of evidence.

Though the MPA was acquitted in this particular case, the case concerning the death of the traffic sergeant is ongoing in an anti-terrorism court as it was registered under Section 322 (punishment for murder) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) legislator and Chairman Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Majeed Achakzai was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Quetta-II Muhammad Iqbal Khilji in tight security. The local court, however, acquitted him in vehicle tampering case over lack of evidence.

The lawmaker was arrested after reports that MPA’s vehicle had hit the traffic warden Haji Ataullah at GPO Chowk crossing-point in the provincial capital on June 20. The warden later succumbed to his injuries.

The hit-and-run case against the MPA is still underway in an anti-terrorism court (ATC) and Achakzai appeared before ATC Quetta-I Judge Dawood Khan Nasar where counsel of Achakzai and Special Public Prosecutor Zahid Ali Khan were also in attendance.

During the hearing, two witnesses - police constable Ayatullah and Levies official Muhammad Anwar - recorded their statements. The court summoned more witnesses and adjourned the proceedings till Dec 28.
